And used successfully. It contributes a pleasing crispness to the sound, and as a real plus is undeniably beautiful. </p><p>This guitar was built for a prior customer in Colorado who wanted our SJ model rendered in Koa. It sports a Bearclaw Sitka Spruce top, and Ebony appointments. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz8BemOLvc6H_bMv02iYrbZNX-CE4zLAQ8X8x2vp3KxBCV16emyMf8M9uJlzAxyrGE6lAJupOd-_YEprLPUKf9CW2B0liWEfdst-ojay5Eb3wXtN75d25uRHwymAizIA0auvIJwW-5Pn5AaA3agxm1lFw1C2UFXqTdJqv8UWqSDoM4fteok-1znKwb1ks/s800/IMG_2330.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; That’s 1960’s, not as many assume, the 1860’s or earlier. Back then, AM radio was an exciting adventure, where each week saw the release of some new song from the latest hot group. New sounds, new concepts, new ideas were the norm. And regardless what our parents thought, there was real creativity being expressed. From Hendrix to Buffalo Springfield to Creedence to Booker T. and the M.G’s there was something for nearly every taste. It was an expressive era, and the music was <i>memorable</i>. You could whistle the tune and bring to mind the song. </p><p>But no one is whistling these days. Other than those whistling down Memory Lane. Giving it my best effort to be objective, while listening to the modern offerings on contemporary radio, I’m struck by the absence of something: melody. Where did it go ? Where is the progress of a musical idea that takes the listener through a pleasant journey, building tension and resolving in a logical conclusion? Where is a tune that is recognizable <i>as a tune? </i>Moving cautiously, blandly, up and down a scale does not a melody make. Why is banality the norm?</p><p>It would be enlightening, if sad, to chronicle the demise of melody. If a diagnostician could tell us when and what was the cause of death. It’s probably a complex answer, and each line a sorrowful one. It probably deserves a song, doesn’t it?</p><p><br /></p>Stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00216081346091309352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3379547838360141451.post-44965322202806323282023-09-21T20:15:00.000-07:002023-09-21T20:15:17.570-07:00Number 200!<p> When you build only 12-14 guitars a year, you don’t expect a large total output. The “milestone” numbers seem elusive—more suited to a factory situation. Those are the guys who have big production numbers. They get more done before lunch than I will do in a career. That said, if you keep working, keep plugging away, there eventually come some numbers that make you want a longer coffee break. Like this one: we just finished #200. And I am as surprised as my parents would have been had they lived to see it!</p><p>So here it is, our 200th guitar. It is a 00 model, sporting a “Tunnel 14” redwood top, over a Brazilian rosewood body. The bindings, rosette, tail wedge and arm bevel are curly Bubinga, a beautiful, dense wood from Africa. The inlays are green Paua, and the purflings are green abalone. Oh yes—shop made Brazilian rosewood buttons for the Schertler tuning machines.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaPW0iYIXvFjjQmnRsgCAEIisdJgpPRdcVKCyFIx_I-rSNjk-QG2VinK6X9zUpRUDkigQJInF5pgj926MDtqx6VXzeuMxVXzfdB5v2sctNVqY8tRix4SQftwzgFBDZbG2AiRa3rfxbF2NZl0SW2x-9im63tK7uYzddbDORgvRHO89zfIRh-L3WXMBYRNk/s1593/IMG_2196.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1593" data-original-width="1060" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaPW0iYIXvFjjQmnRsgCAEIisdJgpPRdcVKCyFIx_I-rSNjk-QG2VinK6X9zUpRUDkigQJInF5pgj926MDtqx6VXzeuMxVXzfdB5v2sctNVqY8tRix4SQftwzgFBDZbG2AiRa3rfxbF2NZl0SW2x-9im63tK7uYzddbDORgvRHO89zfIRh-L3WXMBYRNk/s320/IMG_2196.PNG" width="213" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOKOpQiCCsPsF2VXxPtK4IRcnwkRaT-g-SKjJn2b6Y12wjNlQg36JX3zjTUg0QyDoE-mzmi_4iZWY-gdqtRfW2kSNOTL1DP8c85y3fKmK5MoDh1OaidbSxs2iW8sewdQ9OkJ463KLtA2BguMjbJli4rtYDNJdMcGdWIFmtgROqpghaiXEVtKrSlh_Ipaw/s1597/IMG_2197.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1597" data-original-width="1033" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOKOpQiCCsPsF2VXxPtK4IRcnwkRaT-g-SKjJn2b6Y12wjNlQg36JX3zjTUg0QyDoE-mzmi_4iZWY-gdqtRfW2kSNOTL1DP8c85y3fKmK5MoDh1OaidbSxs2iW8sewdQ9OkJ463KLtA2BguMjbJli4rtYDNJdMcGdWIFmtgROqpghaiXEVtKrSlh_Ipaw/s320/IMG_2197.PNG" width="207" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT5OQco7y15b9WmdGRqKzgJFpqfXbKapQOGMCi2C077JFTDqEMqTp7mOSvPS-nTQ-Nw7c-cG6C9oDkZvw_CfZH2MJKBt0PP3ERf22eFXmAb6aUSww-mAE6ni-GTvURaGPddKEgWLWkvNET5pRMDK-tn5B5zjkaYCyw7caryYAoL85vCkAFy3KQ7E4qN04/s1620/IMG_2194.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1086" data-original-width="1620" height="215" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT5OQco7y15b9WmdGRqKzgJFpqfXbKapQOGMCi2C077JFTDqEMqTp7mOSvPS-nTQ-Nw7c-cG6C9oDkZvw_CfZH2MJKBt0PP3ERf22eFXmAb6aUSww-mAE6ni-GTvURaGPddKEgWLWkvNET5pRMDK-tn5B5zjkaYCyw7caryYAoL85vCkAFy3KQ7E4qN04/s320/IMG_2194.PNG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwGIs3ULNMyrRIJ1Q0a_3sr4i3Nvcsuz7KUDYZ3iWLcKBQsGTW-ZiyDcdVMEhG3UIzn2R3MjB-KZEfI_NcSO3KybTphcsr3cl32py7hS6cD7H80C2LHJzNDBf85qqpi9SAu-wr3id3FU90MdzcJ-b-MvI2cUQ71ilCAf7Lw7cwimdoKBMBctF_E4_Dds4/s1593/IMG_2198.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1593" data-original-width="1060" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwGIs3ULNMyrRIJ1Q0a_3sr4i3Nvcsuz7KUDYZ3iWLcKBQsGTW-ZiyDcdVMEhG3UIzn2R3MjB-KZEfI_NcSO3KybTphcsr3cl32py7hS6cD7H80C2LHJzNDBf85qqpi9SAu-wr3id3FU90MdzcJ-b-MvI2cUQ71ilCAf7Lw7cwimdoKBMBctF_E4_Dds4/s320/IMG_2198.PNG" width="213" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzD9CtvEUfpqDbZVGrdQIMr1IXfB-5csJsZjYGRE3-k_0d1QZgisXaDZliXyGcXCMYuc3W9hwID5MwvsfOG_cQfdayCGVmtuNy-UiIgdhVb0fCdtDHvdw62oyVVks1F8t3xish59nNBcZZol28vU5L4dD97Z5x6VuLZSVrSWSCLEBNkXq4VKTzziBUAPE/s1605/IMG_2193.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="994" data-original-width="1605" height="198" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzD9CtvEUfpqDbZVGrdQIMr1IXfB-5csJsZjYGRE3-k_0d1QZgisXaDZliXyGcXCMYuc3W9hwID5MwvsfOG_cQfdayCGVmtuNy-UiIgdhVb0fCdtDHvdw62oyVVks1F8t3xish59nNBcZZol28vU5L4dD97Z5x6VuLZSVrSWSCLEBNkXq4VKTzziBUAPE/s320/IMG_2193.PNG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00216081346091309352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3379547838360141451.post-30923408812505213612023-08-22T21:09:00.004-07:002023-08-22T21:14:30.991-07:00Another 000–August, 2023<p><br /></p><p>Our newest guitar—also a 000-12–just finished. The answer is, something like 7 years. That’s quite a long time to remain silent! Perhaps we can do better in future… Looking back over old posts, I see that Photobucket’s policy change has removed some of my pics. And I’m afraid some of them are just gone. Ah well, we’ll try to go forward without their help.</p><p>To change the subject a bit, I’d like to quote a verse from a favorite hymn of mine:</p><div style="text-align: left;">“Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon His throne;</div><div style="text-align: left;">Hark! how the heavenly anthem drowns all music but it’s own;</div><div style="text-align: left;">Awake, my soul, and sing of Him who died for thee,</div><div style="text-align: left;">And hail Him as thy matchless King through all eternity.”</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><u>This</u> Ivory Palace will be glad when that anthem resounds unchallenged!</div>Stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00216081346091309352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3379547838360141451.post-54331748270821865042016-03-03T17:22:00.001-08:002016-03-03T17:22:08.424-08:00Ziricote SJ, part 2<div align="justify">

Update time!<br />
We are in our new shop, and are as pleased as can be.<br />
Totally finished? No...but we are enjoying the extra space as well as more logical layout.<br />
I wish the exterior was a post card, but it's not too shabby either.<br />
External view:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
It utilizes cedar posts, with windows between and "stucco" above and beneath.<br />
This was our inspiration:<br />

Which is the studio of the artist who sculpted Mt. Rushmore.<br />
Billie is just glad I was inspired by his building, and not by this one:<br />

This area will be plate joining, inlay, bracing and brace carving. The open box facing north will hold our binding selection and double as a go-bar deck for gluing braces to top and back plates.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u169/SteveK_album/New%20Shop/ab933e9b4374439d07ee86a94aeb9b05.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u169/SteveK_album/New%20Shop/ab933e9b4374439d07ee86a94aeb9b05.jpg" height="238" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
And the other corner of this room, where the rim assembly takes place. You can just see our molds and forms being housed in their new home:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u169/SteveK_album/New%20Shop/93099c08c79ea70a7fdbc112a448da37.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u169/SteveK_album/New%20Shop/93099c08c79ea70a7fdbc112a448da37.jpg" height="238" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
And a few weeks later, we've moved in wood, more tools, and we're really starting to enjoy the new work environment. Drop by some time and get a tour!<br />

Apologies for the long absence. My PC quit talking to Blogspot, so I'm trying to learn how to do all this on an iPad. We'll see if old dogs can learn a new trick or two. I would like to show the progress we <i>have </i>made on our new shop. Here is the north east corner, and the first work bench for this area. Ryan is crouched in full work mode off to the right:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u169/SteveK_album/New%20Shop/859b4145100c667072886cdc6866586b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u169/SteveK_album/New%20Shop/859b4145100c667072886cdc6866586b.jpg" height="320" width="238" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
And with the second bench for this area, the space is nearly finished. We are discovering that it is one thing to build a new building. It is quite another to make it fully functional. But we're getting there, and with each step comes more encouragement!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u169/SteveK_album/New%20Shop/2cc6057b65c865ece94dd57f4887c266.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u169/SteveK_album/New%20Shop/2cc6057b65c865ece94dd57f4887c266.jpg" height="238" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
And a view of the north west corner, or our "clean room". It gets carpet on the floor, because no dust will be made here. This room is for final setup, and such repairs as come in. Not long after this photo, we carpeted the benches to protect the guitar's finish. It is beginning to be usable!<br />
<br />

Here's the box sitting in our truck bed. This is as far as the carrier would deliver:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtzc1p13ct804gJDbbSpOxt8cYryUVGDilGaNMojfBlvVMzXp_tfEoCuRnvD1vNJf9ZCQfUAo9q5PqZHBT98AcGk_CDRQEREuFYfmS5e1o457P0KJGrIj6j9W9byRVKJv6VtULgsjEft4/s1600/Sander1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtzc1p13ct804gJDbbSpOxt8cYryUVGDilGaNMojfBlvVMzXp_tfEoCuRnvD1vNJf9ZCQfUAo9q5PqZHBT98AcGk_CDRQEREuFYfmS5e1o457P0KJGrIj6j9W9byRVKJv6VtULgsjEft4/s1600/Sander1.JPG" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
How to get this inside? Disassemble the crate...maybe the tool can be taken out in pieces?<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgem1K8kSjIrM5XViGiFkBhbZiK26m3zUFBlQgAH3AJ_K6yJx0OmcFY7Y1j3tdwxoFtqrTvsFcjyk1Sn_HW6ucyBBbh1H8ydnaV1aziSe8J14Bu14P-QOc1rSU6eFkGUzcv0D0OdWYwbCM/s1600/Sander2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgem1K8kSjIrM5XViGiFkBhbZiK26m3zUFBlQgAH3AJ_K6yJx0OmcFY7Y1j3tdwxoFtqrTvsFcjyk1Sn_HW6ucyBBbh1H8ydnaV1aziSe8J14Bu14P-QOc1rSU6eFkGUzcv0D0OdWYwbCM/s1600/Sander2.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Afraid not, it's all in one piece. Could we levitate?<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicHAWix3YxKKwf_q8ZWceXLoNQDr91pGwPR5Ybb0wfmd4wG2Jg4gpFboMSkv_mwOlXz9q7nA87oITlby46K_3RStaAROnbLLyyGLTQNa7HdvZ_Ie0-1rinaQtHCx9SFgOfMp5_M1bWglw/s1600/Sander3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicHAWix3YxKKwf_q8ZWceXLoNQDr91pGwPR5Ybb0wfmd4wG2Jg4gpFboMSkv_mwOlXz9q7nA87oITlby46K_3RStaAROnbLLyyGLTQNa7HdvZ_Ie0-1rinaQtHCx9SFgOfMp5_M1bWglw/s1600/Sander3.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
In the end, decided to build a ramp:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjmybKViWZtp3GZR9Nus349QZZ_Q5q1TKoBmMlTCyzQPYHVBfaolM2vUTTYYAW5fY8gPoKn5SPCbF10ageoUurkWfZqspFrdWAW5SDO0aOLsd9-A4__CRWJNMpEG5N6_z5u-mcgwJ1quc/s1600/Sander4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjmybKViWZtp3GZR9Nus349QZZ_Q5q1TKoBmMlTCyzQPYHVBfaolM2vUTTYYAW5fY8gPoKn5SPCbF10ageoUurkWfZqspFrdWAW5SDO0aOLsd9-A4__CRWJNMpEG5N6_z5u-mcgwJ1quc/s1600/Sander4.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
And now we know how the Pyramid Builders felt:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWi-iDkvY2wF7Rg72HDTamplm0GhIPZahrYUKvUMaUEbVZ2mfKlNNgqZsRl7pwepIFkdLA-Xn5xmzP_Fp-aZrd2vyb82W7X2tlUkj1pYD52FP935ptkQz3NUZoZT0XNCG_ZQ0isB9CEOM/s1600/Sander5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWi-iDkvY2wF7Rg72HDTamplm0GhIPZahrYUKvUMaUEbVZ2mfKlNNgqZsRl7pwepIFkdLA-Xn5xmzP_Fp-aZrd2vyb82W7X2tlUkj1pYD52FP935ptkQz3NUZoZT0XNCG_ZQ0isB9CEOM/s1600/Sander5.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
In position! In the background our old Performax is blushing, now being upstaged by this Delta double-drum wonder. Now all we need is some duct work to the dust collector, and we're good to go!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqQd54rCyrEckFX4Jy_49ZQJNjbZKFTuUAbhpHqmSSWvtwF9nnjcMeKkMu6hlDa6eN7hWP20ma13oQGxkNJPYeWGxKtNJpxnMz-sGrcEzSSCiN7cmGGcY_aXnSNxLr3TSqqe460kyTe3k/s1600/Sander6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqQd54rCyrEckFX4Jy_49ZQJNjbZKFTuUAbhpHqmSSWvtwF9nnjcMeKkMu6hlDa6eN7hWP20ma13oQGxkNJPYeWGxKtNJpxnMz-sGrcEzSSCiN7cmGGcY_aXnSNxLr3TSqqe460kyTe3k/s1600/Sander6.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>

It's a bit like applying bindings on a guitar. Finishing touches are always rewarding.<br />
For instance, just look at this trim carpenter...doesn't he look happy?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9zwL7kNdnrZRgbQ1vcxavLQFCbG4OWR0KMUQxxUCJZx2AmQFpN4CSsONGW2jqNT7CnNLJPedcLoO7ayuQMaYg9zoGk0UDgJVufjptqrtaPRuN_hxCtmWz7cx1TMM84VThKscz__CTmqI/s1600/2bc9b42d-3f81-4766-ba5b-b422a504592b%5B1%5D.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9zwL7kNdnrZRgbQ1vcxavLQFCbG4OWR0KMUQxxUCJZx2AmQFpN4CSsONGW2jqNT7CnNLJPedcLoO7ayuQMaYg9zoGk0UDgJVufjptqrtaPRuN_hxCtmWz7cx1TMM84VThKscz__CTmqI/s1600/2bc9b42d-3f81-4766-ba5b-b422a504592b%5B1%5D.jpg" height="320" width="238" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
And here is some of his work:<br />
<br />
This is the front door area, and the French door to the left opens to our "clean room".<br />
Clean--as in only finished instruments allowed.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMcm0LKYXnwbIN-crdX5cLWtlYQ4NPRUXXsYR8eaU1t5Z9KnmgKuj0BMwSTFjOEjW2zVqYkB5w1cnTt7Ed1iFSaPFfZ5FVHH6bQoHfuuCbC5ptxE3DNmGUfPrJiuCLOyeVgzh4k5yIVc8/s1600/Trim2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMcm0LKYXnwbIN-crdX5cLWtlYQ4NPRUXXsYR8eaU1t5Z9KnmgKuj0BMwSTFjOEjW2zVqYkB5w1cnTt7Ed1iFSaPFfZ5FVHH6bQoHfuuCbC5ptxE3DNmGUfPrJiuCLOyeVgzh4k5yIVc8/s1600/Trim2.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
And the north bank of our assembly area:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkc6U_UKpHoHNvT9g40lD9TuVF4wMotcfpRjXrAiffXJGILG24myyTquQU1BwMzAyGCUB3xRIM-wtIEWYDVD8J1UqygpYEwlWYhsRyroNOAjGABxR64MvEI4yEIsMXXWa4c-NI8SgK1xk/s1600/Trim3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkc6U_UKpHoHNvT9g40lD9TuVF4wMotcfpRjXrAiffXJGILG24myyTquQU1BwMzAyGCUB3xRIM-wtIEWYDVD8J1UqygpYEwlWYhsRyroNOAjGABxR64MvEI4yEIsMXXWa4c-NI8SgK1xk/s1600/Trim3.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Now for benches, work tables, tools, jigs and fixtures.<br />
I almost hate to mess this up. It probably will never be this clean again...<br />
<br />
Stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00216081346091309352noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3379547838360141451.post-85190282438699575612013-11-09T21:38:00.000-08:002013-11-09T21:38:17.191-08:00Power!Recently, Reece and his crew finished our wiring.<br />
Here's Elmo, whose background is industrial wiring, demonstrating his skill with a conduit bender:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjli4aAyCNfRHE1uJSAz9VbvTtGLaaPJRAa_kM_mc19j6gqHONZoqX4_NtUuu6QtyY5zptSQmwk4pGMImjI5oBhRAGpJVK6jPwPPnRC0lSd1EUraqN332ifHqsgtRTdFJ6BnIijv5V8wno/s1600/Elec2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjli4aAyCNfRHE1uJSAz9VbvTtGLaaPJRAa_kM_mc19j6gqHONZoqX4_NtUuu6QtyY5zptSQmwk4pGMImjI5oBhRAGpJVK6jPwPPnRC0lSd1EUraqN332ifHqsgtRTdFJ6BnIijv5V8wno/s320/Elec2.JPG" width="212" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
It wasn't long before the nerve center looked like this:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggpzgrIVGHMl3UbxDYL0tGtnp5j1O8CE2t-PrmpuQe854LY9HPsoqKJvI9t3VzyKct0xLg9-FwVZlsilu1OwfEaMjg6K7v0JDKEGtOs6BjCTmHvZMNdfJ_QeKLYkfB7turiyVwOpghq_I/s1600/Elec5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggpzgrIVGHMl3UbxDYL0tGtnp5j1O8CE2t-PrmpuQe854LY9HPsoqKJvI9t3VzyKct0xLg9-FwVZlsilu1OwfEaMjg6K7v0JDKEGtOs6BjCTmHvZMNdfJ_QeKLYkfB7turiyVwOpghq_I/s320/Elec5.JPG" width="212" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
So with power running all over the place, the rest of the crew could start installing lights:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigeY8d_8CnfgpJC1IX_wZ3Bk8Ogc72ZuXGwBhHchQj5_77ddQqxbybJIkXh_XTYq6FmBIqRofe8u7m-3Y-RD42B3lwefYUvBTQhpidmSzrTvSsOJiuF0r4_c_nkZO20DfXUzH1tO_Vspk/s1600/Elec1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigeY8d_8CnfgpJC1IX_wZ3Bk8Ogc72ZuXGwBhHchQj5_77ddQqxbybJIkXh_XTYq6FmBIqRofe8u7m-3Y-RD42B3lwefYUvBTQhpidmSzrTvSsOJiuF0r4_c_nkZO20DfXUzH1tO_Vspk/s320/Elec1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_SHZWmndn7Vd2cM7YBBlxLNN5hAstST56SV5suKxXFPeDz0tIOvzbPj4wvl_wnei5Eu7PS2-krc732xr9NGdwLS-KsvnJ3ZuMRvPmtzx4WVtYxJq-2IOs8oFhUtJlzXAW37YsvFhcI0c/s1600/Elec8.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_SHZWmndn7Vd2cM7YBBlxLNN5hAstST56SV5suKxXFPeDz0tIOvzbPj4wvl_wnei5Eu7PS2-krc732xr9NGdwLS-KsvnJ3ZuMRvPmtzx4WVtYxJq-2IOs8oFhUtJlzXAW37YsvFhcI0c/s320/Elec8.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfS0N3f-Z7hZD9YeayLv0fYuZ6BIJBGWC-4G7eCZMkmsKZzxjHuw00Px9gdqpc2eNk8gnkYm9-ThdXdM-HkH_U2DSkfx6jgzXKvVjrvQpd1i5GfO4c0N-LS72lHlae-Cq_6FpsgSEYw9E/s1600/Elec10.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfS0N3f-Z7hZD9YeayLv0fYuZ6BIJBGWC-4G7eCZMkmsKZzxjHuw00Px9gdqpc2eNk8gnkYm9-ThdXdM-HkH_U2DSkfx6jgzXKvVjrvQpd1i5GfO4c0N-LS72lHlae-Cq_6FpsgSEYw9E/s320/Elec10.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
And this view of the north wall, where assembly benches will run--each bank of windows will have these mini spots to throw light down on the benches:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNkkrOkoYJ-jXCV_TOAiqzdVN9ed0ywX6qZ8lvIKChUIkMd-Tct5Guk6K_NQy1_PD68SjYqPNz8GhnIzdXUqqHoB1TYSVv5SLcxUYl1nBBVty7vbvUM0OoWpzAhku41UJE2eRcYE2RptA/s1600/Elec11.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNkkrOkoYJ-jXCV_TOAiqzdVN9ed0ywX6qZ8lvIKChUIkMd-Tct5Guk6K_NQy1_PD68SjYqPNz8GhnIzdXUqqHoB1TYSVv5SLcxUYl1nBBVty7vbvUM0OoWpzAhku41UJE2eRcYE2RptA/s320/Elec11.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Thanks for watching along!<br />

And now my Texas lutherie buddies are starting to ask, "Did you ever finish that shop?" Short answer is: "no". Turns out that's also the long answer.<br />
But I <u>can</u> elaborate a bit. There has been a great deal of interior work going on.<br />
Like this shot of Jonathan working on the middle wall. To the right will be the Big Hall Of Tools.<br />
To the left, where Jonathan is working, will be our assembly area.<br />
<br />

It sports a rainforest theme, and the inlay was done by Craig Lavin.<br />
Bob wanted Snakewood tuner buttons to match the overlay and bindings (and fretboard).<br />
We're pleased with the way the buttons compliment the head:<br />
<br />

Lest anyone think all we do is build shops around here, it seems prudent to post some pics of actual guitar work. This guitar was finished recently and sent to its proud new owner in New York state.<br />
Rick's favorite wood (for back and sides) is Cocobolo. So it was with pleasure we used our best set for his guitar. With that we paired a top of really silky Lutz spruce. Here's a view of the front:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijX1wGwE1SngjGUQPbT3e-MLjPXPKsie5PWN4uvMPH6rXSloklCUiRnuS9TMtjyMbJBkqNquVeYRZF_PoKuFbtv-SagEOdcRM3m5fSCCQqZcM2oPfdqJlAuS94vRBB1CJ3IY9r2pyf0Mk/s1600/005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijX1wGwE1SngjGUQPbT3e-MLjPXPKsie5PWN4uvMPH6rXSloklCUiRnuS9TMtjyMbJBkqNquVeYRZF_PoKuFbtv-SagEOdcRM3m5fSCCQqZcM2oPfdqJlAuS94vRBB1CJ3IY9r2pyf0Mk/s320/005.JPG" width="212" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
And a close up of the left shoulder, where you will find a sound port. An auxiliary sound hole, but this one aimed at the player's ear. Like a stage monitor, it enables a bit more sound to reach the guitarist:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw1Hs7Um6wvYQ37jz2Upv6Xlr5hfx40LMtHwPCbUyHRWAcwLi9V_pc2I8JenrOk2Nf5-d0uMYzB0n1YR8-R4rOo66DsJ28PiwPRvUkX3EQOgZEej4-RnLkNvvsencUvDPWeuQhlbPmi_k/s1600/007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw1Hs7Um6wvYQ37jz2Upv6Xlr5hfx40LMtHwPCbUyHRWAcwLi9V_pc2I8JenrOk2Nf5-d0uMYzB0n1YR8-R4rOo66DsJ28PiwPRvUkX3EQOgZEej4-RnLkNvvsencUvDPWeuQhlbPmi_k/s320/007.JPG" width="212" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Another interesting feature of this guitar is the Ryan-style arm bevel. Done in a dark piece of Macassar ebony (like the bindings) it adds a level of comfort for the player's right arm. No sharp edges digging in!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTFXa2WbC97V1vQps36hV4pGYhcQ6R90ns7U98m2JoD3yDDYEJ8EtSmc9qCNzNrYzo93Mu_5GdNFrebL6i0rYoEKd_YhK_eOmoyJkv8s5bVsKQt5hwUSTjxa3aVzETcH76B7OjMJivH30/s1600/017.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTFXa2WbC97V1vQps36hV4pGYhcQ6R90ns7U98m2JoD3yDDYEJ8EtSmc9qCNzNrYzo93Mu_5GdNFrebL6i0rYoEKd_YhK_eOmoyJkv8s5bVsKQt5hwUSTjxa3aVzETcH76B7OjMJivH30/s320/017.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
And a shot of that pretty back:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgidJrQC7pH9SjoMyRZx_8Qql8R63PuBVkSNQb5nzdccnBWgU1Nl7nnV9g4KEo2dzu9BSPB3M262augXaJtWbWFqRDjrzyOoFgJFW8Rm8zwXWci7PHD-4b-cZ7wHqvgMwR4sXWVNtCFF38/s1600/021.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgidJrQC7pH9SjoMyRZx_8Qql8R63PuBVkSNQb5nzdccnBWgU1Nl7nnV9g4KEo2dzu9BSPB3M262augXaJtWbWFqRDjrzyOoFgJFW8Rm8zwXWci7PHD-4b-cZ7wHqvgMwR4sXWVNtCFF38/s320/021.JPG" width="212" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Finally a view of the end wedge detail, which also shows the Cocobolo's grain to good advantage:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw9AWfKz4rW0k3LN3OY5ToMueBQzu3i2cc576SHGkN32MY6N5H5IeOS3a_6RvRqBZlsfwh2gXSj3Ch4kIvPImYC0E0DTXPV-Vo_acccLvX-UPcKO1xJVDMfqkl8GzPIga4bm4pD5Waxds/s1600/Sheets3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw9AWfKz4rW0k3LN3OY5ToMueBQzu3i2cc576SHGkN32MY6N5H5IeOS3a_6RvRqBZlsfwh2gXSj3Ch4kIvPImYC0E0DTXPV-Vo_acccLvX-UPcKO1xJVDMfqkl8GzPIga4bm4pD5Waxds/s320/Sheets3.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Now, meet Mason. He's the lithe young man laying out roof panels, while Jonathan keeps the decking from floating away:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbAcu6bMbnfQid20Jfq95zUaYlgL-S49E5Mgw0l7EJZbI7CrF5UMD7vpPgGywV4qg31z260-uNyWl1J8GRWoQDYofvPHXnXqCHS_L0fwxMiwiE9H8-K7R9NFH0_jY7pwZriUUn4Qkvoyo/s1600/Sheets4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbAcu6bMbnfQid20Jfq95zUaYlgL-S49E5Mgw0l7EJZbI7CrF5UMD7vpPgGywV4qg31z260-uNyWl1J8GRWoQDYofvPHXnXqCHS_L0fwxMiwiE9H8-K7R9NFH0_jY7pwZriUUn4Qkvoyo/s320/Sheets4.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
With the roof panels started, Mason is able to cut the wall panels to their proper angles:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsTSvR442L_Fj2MTCBJw8u68CLVhqg1OO9id-cl0Zn-gKg-2ORXIbm7DDqBgXITJqsviQfY-nXUnxrNX5AfVK29M9pq_Fe9rgzyux_Vz4cRQyHMi8A7-ZTYuGcEY8PUSj6R8Tco07m4oI/s1600/Sheets6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsTSvR442L_Fj2MTCBJw8u68CLVhqg1OO9id-cl0Zn-gKg-2ORXIbm7DDqBgXITJqsviQfY-nXUnxrNX5AfVK29M9pq_Fe9rgzyux_Vz4cRQyHMi8A7-ZTYuGcEY8PUSj6R8Tco07m4oI/s320/Sheets6.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Which enabled the crew to install the rake trim, yielding something of a finished appearance. This no longer resembles the Alamo, but we are quite pleased with the lines nonetheless:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZq7CsOyUdCZYGKu5ZzeAo-raSWuwiVYyhJmdayWTpiXgiJmV76OFlB0J89qmv1pv9Zygzn3aszyXnMKn4xSmcpeEiX5G4bTQhFJA1FIRVZhvYk18rGcTlpNbD_GdTc66nO-GSK2MWdzI/s1600/Sheets8.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZq7CsOyUdCZYGKu5ZzeAo-raSWuwiVYyhJmdayWTpiXgiJmV76OFlB0J89qmv1pv9Zygzn3aszyXnMKn4xSmcpeEiX5G4bTQhFJA1FIRVZhvYk18rGcTlpNbD_GdTc66nO-GSK2MWdzI/s320/Sheets8.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The roof was finished fairly quickly. Seems that before we knew it, the guys were installing the east wall sheets:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

And this is the view as of Saturday, 6 April. It is a little hard to see in this shot, but most of the front window trim is now installed. A bit more Hardie board, a front door (!) and we'll be dried-in:<br />
<br />

Here the north wall (window wall) is getting sheathed with plywood. The inspiration for this wall is the Sculptor's Studio at Mt. Rushmore, the one used by Gutzon Borglum. This will be a far cry from his timber frame wonder, but the best we can do!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGZOQ40SsQBoWWZr0Gx7Rl_LAnSHhtVt_pzxDG2LrCkj7GLMgYB8TwelDv5gaGKZCHZrIEz5iDdQjsy7g7qsaTWoJGCRWuLUgiShS4R7gCj5LyyXmOwlX_TkQq7eGLdfRJ-yuiMrW2LYM/s1600/Framing+13.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGZOQ40SsQBoWWZr0Gx7Rl_LAnSHhtVt_pzxDG2LrCkj7GLMgYB8TwelDv5gaGKZCHZrIEz5iDdQjsy7g7qsaTWoJGCRWuLUgiShS4R7gCj5LyyXmOwlX_TkQq7eGLdfRJ-yuiMrW2LYM/s320/Framing+13.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Back to the west wall. Here Jonathan is nailing up a stucco-patterned board as wainscot. The metal sheets will terminate on the wainscot cap (cedar) which we hope gives the building an appearance more inviting, less industrial:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ8N2apoGuBwG-hYc2v3DIXIomRaPSNubdkR4qIRtwHWe0R2mPs3XkZ6bLufPgEmMCrA7LWKbtZffFIPaYivg6IfVjdOaOtqZDIynOpitG7unXRjCl-oFeO37BlCSE-ZmAf8fYdaYcQLs/s1600/Framing11.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ8N2apoGuBwG-hYc2v3DIXIomRaPSNubdkR4qIRtwHWe0R2mPs3XkZ6bLufPgEmMCrA7LWKbtZffFIPaYivg6IfVjdOaOtqZDIynOpitG7unXRjCl-oFeO37BlCSE-ZmAf8fYdaYcQLs/s320/Framing11.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
With the wainscot in place, we are finally ready for the metal siding. You can tell that Spring has started in earnest here in East Texas:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdppG6wyUN5PYO3k_G467ChtSdUgcXhfjwPYD6l-PKr0rJ0nikIuvZ6hyrJ_Oc0YAEzIz0NAhw6uo6F_hsQ1QK3FgWrmbsDgOgQiIl1l6hWA5QXZ2S9zuKKqaGsKLk2T9LPg8jhhFu5KU/s1600/Sheets2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a> </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLh_rgr3RauKS1YyMBGzxgJ1Sl5nMGRxBTHcECRrefIUfCFFlx8uIovMjpGmwWCqAqxUffD52pHSw0b9zppiNeDigJGRCWioi3QPs7tgr7b2QpbIk8D-XG7m95dg0HC1MR9R2gT6qi2zo/s1600/Sheets1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLh_rgr3RauKS1YyMBGzxgJ1Sl5nMGRxBTHcECRrefIUfCFFlx8uIovMjpGmwWCqAqxUffD52pHSw0b9zppiNeDigJGRCWioi3QPs7tgr7b2QpbIk8D-XG7m95dg0HC1MR9R2gT6qi2zo/s320/Sheets1.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
And the view of our west wall after the sheets are all applied:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJsvr4wOJQgW8ZbVxt8KSx3uOg0l9-2MCvf2fKU2yk3bROQh7wcniWwWy8CYw_qSmklbBzVvmsTlcqhl0xpqJUjRwjRKCYtSpg3brBvHCNMCA-nCaPJCHf1-_VQ_uiO4W3DQESx37Jx5M/s1600/Sheets2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJsvr4wOJQgW8ZbVxt8KSx3uOg0l9-2MCvf2fKU2yk3bROQh7wcniWwWy8CYw_qSmklbBzVvmsTlcqhl0xpqJUjRwjRKCYtSpg3brBvHCNMCA-nCaPJCHf1-_VQ_uiO4W3DQESx37Jx5M/s320/Sheets2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Of course those sheets will be trimmed to follow the rake of the roof, which will give the finished appearance. Good job, guys!<br />
<br />
Oh, and a final shot showing the shop cat. He suffers from a severe case of curiosity, and he was intrigued by this high corner once it was closed in:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgVsgw4IBoDiYnkuvvA_ZZjwyxzwtA09mJSqVIW5x-_AuRlBt40Bu5hQ4R8zYUUshuDa2SMaURVanoY37eNVxnuFJ08EW4r40pEqlM3Dlfmp4xMcgqoHMM5Mdl4QiFM7qm-IT6kIWkToI/s1600/Vis9.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgVsgw4IBoDiYnkuvvA_ZZjwyxzwtA09mJSqVIW5x-_AuRlBt40Bu5hQ4R8zYUUshuDa2SMaURVanoY37eNVxnuFJ08EW4r40pEqlM3Dlfmp4xMcgqoHMM5Mdl4QiFM7qm-IT6kIWkToI/s320/Vis9.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Predictably, he could not get himself down. That was my job. Fortunately, we have a number of ladders around the place.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdppG6wyUN5PYO3k_G467ChtSdUgcXhfjwPYD6l-PKr0rJ0nikIuvZ6hyrJ_Oc0YAEzIz0NAhw6uo6F_hsQ1QK3FgWrmbsDgOgQiIl1l6hWA5QXZ2S9zuKKqaGsKLk2T9LPg8jhhFu5KU/s1600/Sheets2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a>Stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00216081346091309352noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3379547838360141451.post-49809425112778916802013-03-16T20:34:00.000-07:002013-03-16T20:34:49.450-07:00Wood and Steel"Wood and Steel" may not be an original title, but it is a descriptive one.<br />
Our plan has been to attach a wooden section to the metal frame--both increasing floor size and making the whole building a bit more organic. This 8' x 40' addition will have a bank of north-facing windows, and benches along that north wall to take advantage of glare-free light. And, get a nice view of the back yard as a bonus. Here, Eric and Jonathan are attaching ledger boards to the eave strut. You can see the framing for those north windows:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvdGllr1bJEhbQl5lemh59zRotkXEkb98CxU774tkO3GeqiVUW6faAHKTttLXxDywt-ousvFavz8JXBm1ZKQrt0V8jU62NyZqwA-PtJHbIbZuzDMtx9DliMmQb3VQQPvTp_t48qMNeoTI/s1600/Framing+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvdGllr1bJEhbQl5lemh59zRotkXEkb98CxU774tkO3GeqiVUW6faAHKTttLXxDywt-ousvFavz8JXBm1ZKQrt0V8jU62NyZqwA-PtJHbIbZuzDMtx9DliMmQb3VQQPvTp_t48qMNeoTI/s320/Framing+2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
And to the ledger boards, rafters are nailed for a shed roof:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisNFFJ6jid3l2UBOsk2ytJla20wLR_piBuNMPORdUmruiISGUD0zj4fLzeRxn2MR1418Y42_5I3CbWmm-44VtbYE0goxwcaSF15buMyeifiwFL-Dk2Y0-OVkwEZ_UZGM3UyzlBfjiz-NE/s1600/Framing+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisNFFJ6jid3l2UBOsk2ytJla20wLR_piBuNMPORdUmruiISGUD0zj4fLzeRxn2MR1418Y42_5I3CbWmm-44VtbYE0goxwcaSF15buMyeifiwFL-Dk2Y0-OVkwEZ_UZGM3UyzlBfjiz-NE/s320/Framing+3.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Add some plywood decking:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizTEm357orxaNMAls80w2uvqpdQeck7iXlVxDjkjH5dk7x1I_HGTsthTGfKH5elnWDqox4YNV9uy6zGq3cs9hgge0avsyYfa6kd1CEK3jAYB-h8DrdMcsd2wWRvz3k-YPB56hboQxf6yg/s1600/Framing+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizTEm357orxaNMAls80w2uvqpdQeck7iXlVxDjkjH5dk7x1I_HGTsthTGfKH5elnWDqox4YNV9uy6zGq3cs9hgge0avsyYfa6kd1CEK3jAYB-h8DrdMcsd2wWRvz3k-YPB56hboQxf6yg/s320/Framing+4.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Then some 30# felt, and it's starting to look like an enclosed space:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7AQd8uKc78-Ea_gaMQIrDi0Y0i6-XcET-PpxSyN2lPxOwoz3bqh6vE3PuPkCmKvGYCh69BjhZLmpF5mzSZzsqV8dFFafS4my_tHR_iGWOTKuEb8kzB10eIoqNbQSuk56SGhPTB6XWiO4/s1600/Framing+5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7AQd8uKc78-Ea_gaMQIrDi0Y0i6-XcET-PpxSyN2lPxOwoz3bqh6vE3PuPkCmKvGYCh69BjhZLmpF5mzSZzsqV8dFFafS4my_tHR_iGWOTKuEb8kzB10eIoqNbQSuk56SGhPTB6XWiO4/s320/Framing+5.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Time to start on the side walls. Plywood sheathing has been nailed up, and next comes the vapor barrier:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXuiiQQXxW05CSan-K8Z1TwJm9ZsvMfyEime63lMw8UVTyJpg2Ci4ZZVwn9mw8-IYFi95QoAZMBCSfe_9zPvVGoNnuemarVkzBn0JGqoJi8qTnaU-BgBSOZuJGdMe9ZPK2Dc6Ehh2OoNs/s1600/Framing+7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXuiiQQXxW05CSan-K8Z1TwJm9ZsvMfyEime63lMw8UVTyJpg2Ci4ZZVwn9mw8-IYFi95QoAZMBCSfe_9zPvVGoNnuemarVkzBn0JGqoJi8qTnaU-BgBSOZuJGdMe9ZPK2Dc6Ehh2OoNs/s320/Framing+7.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Which enables the crew to install the west-facing window:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtdOvI6hY6I38hkJYKgVO4VDwJr7XlI4MvW1vwP22f4TtrTo0DUcIDzdPn3NIaE4meOUEHbzclL2QBRSmdZF164cM2gf56kbsg-FOkBE1eliGx7ub3ioYRorpNs3fn5wBeswfsOOslaIA/s1600/Framing+10.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtdOvI6hY6I38hkJYKgVO4VDwJr7XlI4MvW1vwP22f4TtrTo0DUcIDzdPn3NIaE4meOUEHbzclL2QBRSmdZF164cM2gf56kbsg-FOkBE1eliGx7ub3ioYRorpNs3fn5wBeswfsOOslaIA/s320/Framing+10.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This was most welcome. With our window in place, we can open it up for some fresh air...it was getting rather stuffy in there.<br />
<br />

They have been doing the really difficult parts of the metal work this week. Here they are admiring the eave struts and roof purlins just installed. It is wonderful having their expertise around the site!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQg3s1megW_vlT2aAj_QDTwwMNS0PcfUP_yeGOLVJJqP86ELDjddw0jkjOYZd00gjb5MCRgVaSG-Udw-4sfgAzB__a9GiX4T8-ch1T7Z9lCmx0T7hYBkmCsYV1iao91DrbJRE3Ajw8p6o/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQg3s1megW_vlT2aAj_QDTwwMNS0PcfUP_yeGOLVJJqP86ELDjddw0jkjOYZd00gjb5MCRgVaSG-Udw-4sfgAzB__a9GiX4T8-ch1T7Z9lCmx0T7hYBkmCsYV1iao91DrbJRE3Ajw8p6o/s320/001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Take this next shot for instance--I'm delighted that's Eric up there and not me:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgepdd5fC0Vvdz3KcaTcypuTqJrJINUbeCgpDzVPBvDh8k-NevytREk1mJas80NrNwKyHdsre4HWAggSV9ZQ-0xATHWmM1AKzreVH6w548DET2WvYQYkG298N_nf52NN5L-JAS-I76UrCk/s1600/002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgepdd5fC0Vvdz3KcaTcypuTqJrJINUbeCgpDzVPBvDh8k-NevytREk1mJas80NrNwKyHdsre4HWAggSV9ZQ-0xATHWmM1AKzreVH6w548DET2WvYQYkG298N_nf52NN5L-JAS-I76UrCk/s320/002.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Or this one, hanging the roll-up door:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOuTYuVM6YWUDBI2xSPdaoS3yWWnZt0Thus4suMON4jHWetmDkW1W9t6Iq3N6dST-hPhj9GkIqL1KgjdwnIrWCD3vHUYYyNFmIgalmGgUTidVxExFtmU3hwuZIr5p2mqQUdIEtQit4Fgo/s1600/004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOuTYuVM6YWUDBI2xSPdaoS3yWWnZt0Thus4suMON4jHWetmDkW1W9t6Iq3N6dST-hPhj9GkIqL1KgjdwnIrWCD3vHUYYyNFmIgalmGgUTidVxExFtmU3hwuZIr5p2mqQUdIEtQit4Fgo/s320/004.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Until finally the doors are hung, and fully functional:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjX2i-XsiM5KOnCJOl9JZ5hezhlF3fUt3OwHUjh1bY0vneB7Yv2Zrx2vLOTGxw1besBQMup4pbADhScECzTWBggUSMbUn7XSAEbzXGhGTIxgAmcWgrDxjDYscWWmsyJWq4lY-m4HYSZs9g/s1600/005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjX2i-XsiM5KOnCJOl9JZ5hezhlF3fUt3OwHUjh1bY0vneB7Yv2Zrx2vLOTGxw1besBQMup4pbADhScECzTWBggUSMbUn7XSAEbzXGhGTIxgAmcWgrDxjDYscWWmsyJWq4lY-m4HYSZs9g/s320/005.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Which is a load off my mind. Now we can lock the place and prevent unwanted intrusion.<br />
<br />
:)<br />
Stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00216081346091309352noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3379547838360141451.post-67856473161217347502013-02-16T20:47:00.003-08:002013-02-16T20:47:45.983-08:00Here it Comes...After the slab had cured for a couple of weeks, we were prepared to take delivery of the metal building. Perhaps I should mention that 3/4 of this new shop will be a metal building, giving us fairly large expanses of open floor space. The remaining 1/4 of the shop will be conventional framing with a bank of north-facing windows. We are really looking forward to that amount of natural, glare-free light. So here comes the package:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjunlUSvy_Efd81t7bmfZW3_Yuh7dzEEYDJOMI3GEpewZfhi7J9dqohWOm7J9FIRXD0L8o93FClFNTJtPA6lzF8jC-yDyzOSPHHQTuFNsq8AQZdB_tMW_1Rk-FSzk4W1gWMa5x4mleoxrw/s1600/050.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjunlUSvy_Efd81t7bmfZW3_Yuh7dzEEYDJOMI3GEpewZfhi7J9dqohWOm7J9FIRXD0L8o93FClFNTJtPA6lzF8jC-yDyzOSPHHQTuFNsq8AQZdB_tMW_1Rk-FSzk4W1gWMa5x4mleoxrw/s320/050.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Notice to the rear of the delivery truck pink evidence of an early spring.<br />
And here is Keith, unloading our shop, bundle by bundle:<br />
<br />
<br />

Our crew: Ryan on the ladder, James and I studying the south east corner, my dad scrutinizing the progress, and Trinity (James' wife) walking around, classing-up the place. We are certainly glad to have gotten such marvelous help, and hope that sore muscles will soon recover!<br />

After much thought, labor, bad weather etc., we finally have a foundation. As a plus, it's fairly handsome as these things go. In this shot one of the finishers is preparing to remove the bolt template which held anchor bolts in place:<br />

By Sunday all that was left to do was hose down the slab to aid in the curing process. Here is my dear wife Billie, also our C.O.O., happily lending a hand. <br />

So now all that remains is for the concrete crew to remove the forms and in a few days we'll start going up with the frame. Praise God from Whom all blessings flow!Stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00216081346091309352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3379547838360141451.post-89317656663920072072013-01-27T19:59:00.002-08:002013-01-27T20:02:14.674-08:00Progress, Part 3Saturday, Jan 26--at long last we have made some concrete advances.<br />
Crew arrived and got busy immediately, for the cement truck arrived right at 7 a.m.<br />
Before long, it was running down the chute:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3TOSgPaePDHRuVctEuKnY-_RSHbMvI257n56Ot9jo1i5ond8jbnFPmq_QK4zMqiStSQW4iachB5Z3A6sQgIoD3IgNZI2P5_N7k4gOf0P1cSa6xVIMEcjnskVxd2aQskfPcd19SImM1aA/s1600/Slab1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3TOSgPaePDHRuVctEuKnY-_RSHbMvI257n56Ot9jo1i5ond8jbnFPmq_QK4zMqiStSQW4iachB5Z3A6sQgIoD3IgNZI2P5_N7k4gOf0P1cSa6xVIMEcjnskVxd2aQskfPcd19SImM1aA/s320/Slab1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
The quickly-paced job was to grab the wire mesh and lift it into the mid range of that concrete, while pulling the heavy mix into position. Like everything else, the pros make it look easy:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizWJLxaqZ0RGTsKx5wwJvtv7MHzm_ox1_K-odr9fAhqP2-OJVOoLvO6hhtScOfK1YzNY7pOjhxrE2bR_fJIQGqE-R0XyVvrxCr4oRPA8ORVkEv-9f1gKUjgVtvWATYg_PsEy60ri7rx98/s1600/Slab3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizWJLxaqZ0RGTsKx5wwJvtv7MHzm_ox1_K-odr9fAhqP2-OJVOoLvO6hhtScOfK1YzNY7pOjhxrE2bR_fJIQGqE-R0XyVvrxCr4oRPA8ORVkEv-9f1gKUjgVtvWATYg_PsEy60ri7rx98/s320/Slab3.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
After a bit, the forms are getting loaded up with what will be our shop floor. They are working on our tool room in this shot:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyPRn3XIfFW7GDp4kDXL_8Pute08i7ppLDSWkmoJFvAHSKR4H-QRRLkwLZSkDS25Kp1IQAjGAVVnjbFL2V0H_fgA83QuAQQmaK7qsr_szOSYf3j4Fd4jV1_g9t_JUa3quTeqUWWVnSTac/s1600/Slab4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyPRn3XIfFW7GDp4kDXL_8Pute08i7ppLDSWkmoJFvAHSKR4H-QRRLkwLZSkDS25Kp1IQAjGAVVnjbFL2V0H_fgA83QuAQQmaK7qsr_szOSYf3j4Fd4jV1_g9t_JUa3quTeqUWWVnSTac/s320/Slab4.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
And more leveling, tugging, pulling, etc...<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZYttv9TyjZVPE4RPiOHAC-mSclZGklSXCy3wfixVIQl1LyoKvDZY1JM8NrVdQh3-naXPRH9jwwfo2_Y-oSFaeOIs-lnknqMdVO2WZjVijV-HLHG3HwyOTY-KbcsDzmKb2QdlWok45ioU/s1600/Slab6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZYttv9TyjZVPE4RPiOHAC-mSclZGklSXCy3wfixVIQl1LyoKvDZY1JM8NrVdQh3-naXPRH9jwwfo2_Y-oSFaeOIs-lnknqMdVO2WZjVijV-HLHG3HwyOTY-KbcsDzmKb2QdlWok45ioU/s320/Slab6.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
The third truck brought out about half a load, giving us something like a 25 yard pour. Here's the last bit getting dumped into the west side of our tool room:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
